How To Fix A Squeaky Wood
Floor
A common question many people have when it comes to problems
with hardwood floors is, how do I fix the squeak in my floor?
It's an annoying problem to say the least.
The cure for the issue will depend on how bad the problem
is. Here's what I mean.
If the boards only squeak when you walk on them, but do not
sag, it's an easy fix. But, if they also sag as you step on
them, it will be a little more involved.
Why Hardwood Floors
Squeak
The main reason for squeaky hardwood floors is because one
board is rubbing against another. This can be from humidity,
hot, cold and plain old everyday use.
To fix those miner squeaks, try filling the slot with talcum
powder or graphite powder. This is a very effective method of
lubricating the boards and eliminating the squeaking.
This should work for a while, but you may need to do it over
again as time goes by.
More severe hardwood floor squeaks will take a little extra
effort.
Fixing Major Squeaks
If you can get underneath your hardwood floor, you can shim
the joist next to the squeak, and then use wood screws through
the sub floor and into the board causing the squeak.
Another option is to find the squeak on top of the surface
and pound a couple of finishing nails through the edges of the
boards.
Angle your nails so they don't back out over time. Be sure
to countersink all nails and then fill them with wood putty to
conceal the nail heads.
If you find more severe flooring problems where you feel
they might collapse, then you'll need to do some
replacement.
Try these simple tips when you get those annoying squeaks in
your hardwood floor. I think you'll find it's all you need to
fix the problem.
